PLAYER of the WEEK - YEAR


Player of the Year; Feb 25, 1997
Maria Figueras - Of all the players SCFun saw (12 of
23 Division I teams) this year, Maria was definitely the most
impressive athlete on the floor. Tremendous body control, balance,
leaping ability, "good hands", anticipation, etc. Good luck to the
Roger's senior.
Week #10; Feb 22, 1997
Christine Kane - The East Greenwich junior is always
"there". Always in the middle of the action. She can be a force in so
many ways. She is a "heads up", smart player who never seems to lose
her "cool". She scored 17 points and played excellent defense in East
Greenwich's 57-48 victory over South Kingstown.
Week #9; Feb 15, 1997
Sarah Stanhope - The South Kingstown sophomore point
guard scored a total of 34 points against Westerly (spoiling their 
play-off hopes) and Chariho as the Rebel's won two in a row for the
first time this year. Her 10 or 11 consecutive free throws (12/14)
helped clinch the win against Westerly.
Week #8; Feb 08, 1997 
Voulunteers - Whether paid or not, who coach, keep stats,
and help out in any way so the 'kids can play".
Week #7; Feb 01, 1997
Monica Carty and Jen Duggan - Two seniors from South Kingstown
who represent the best in RIHS Basketball. Players who give their best
game after game whether they are in first place and headed for the
playoffs or hopelessly "out of it". Congratulations to you and all the
players who "play to play" and treat every game as if it is the state
championship.
Sarah Tift - The North Kingstown center had to have a great
game to avoid an upset by South Kingstown and she did. Miss
Consistency scored 28 points from all over the floor while grabbing
numerous rebounds. She also threw in a few "blocked shots".
Week #6; Jan 25, 1997
Kelli Knight - The Coventry redhead is a cool one. She
had five three-pointers and 24 points to lead Coventry in a cross-over
victory against South Kingstown, 72-52.
Week #5; Jan 18, 1997
Shellie Parkinson - The heart of the South Kingstown
team, this hustling center had a super game against Toll Gate. She
scored 29 points while leading the Rebels to their first league win.
Jessica Ouellette - Great eye. Never misses from 3-point
land. Personally destroyed South Kingstown with five 3-pointers and 33
points.
Week #4; Jan 11, 1997
Meaghan McGonagle - Great kid, great attitude. The
6'3" center had an outstanding game against South Kingstown with 25
points and 16 rebounds. Are RI Colleges recruiting her?
Week #3-split; Jan 04, 1997
Casie Rhodes - A hustling player. Had a great game
against South Kingstown. Can't tell you how great because the coach
didn't put the results in the paper. Doesn't that upset you, i.e.,
don't some of you parents save the box scores for your kid's scrap
book - now you have a hole instead of a box score. (She 
scored 23.)
The North Kingstown Team - They have full warmups plus
matching shoes. Wow - that must take a lot of work. What's it take to
get matching shoes, about a dozen meetings, a few committees, what?
Week #2; Dec 21, 1996
Bethany Iacoi - A basketball player, not a girl who plays
basketball. Had 28 points against SK. Tapes her ankles and that was
the clincher.
The Chariho Team - Because they do real push-ups, not
those wimpy "I'm just-a-girl pushups".
Week #1+; Dec 14, 1996
Maria Figueras - Roger's guard. Scored 14 and 19
points in a win against SK and a loss against Westerly. More
importantly, showed her talent as an all around floor general.
Shannon Perry - La Salle guard. Scored a zillion points to
help La Salle get off to a 3-0 record.

Mar 08, 1997 (Game #F1): Ponaganset vs St. Raphael - Ponaganset wins 58-40

  Despite skepticism that the young Chieftains - who had just one
returning starter from last year's state championship team - could
possibly repeat, they rose to the occasion at yesterday's Credit Union
Classic.  Ponaganset overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat
St. Raphael, 58-40, for the second year in a row in the Division I
Girls Basketball Championship at the Civic Center. The victory brought
the Chieftains an unprecedented fifth consecutive state title. 
"Our goal this season was to come back and show everybody who
doubted us that we could win a state championship without five 
All-Staters on the team," said junior guard Heather Dandrow, who
shined with a game-high 22 points that included a 12-for-12
performance from the foul line. "To show that instead of individual
stars, we could come out as a team and play as a team and win this
thing."
  Unlike past years, Ponaganset was considered the underdog this
season. La Salle and St. Raphael, both ranked among the top teams in
New England this winter, were pegged as the teams to beat.
  But the Chieftains always find a way to win. After losing, 53-46, to
St. Ray's in the teams' first meeting, Ponaganset bounced back with a
46-41 victory in the second contest.
  And although they lost both regular-season games to La Salle, the
fifth-seeded Chieftains earned another chance to defend their title
with a 49-48 upset of the top-ranked Rams. St. Ray's, the second seed,
earned its second trip to the finals with a 50-48 semifinal victory
over I-South champ Rogers.
  "Especially with my sister (Julie) graduating, everyone was saying
that it was Ponaganset's last state championship after we walked out
of here last year, and I wanted it so bad," said senior captain Helene
Stockwell, who was named the tournament's most outstanding player for
her 13 points, 14 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks.
  "In the beginning it was rough. We hadn't played together a lot and
we didn't really gel as a team. After we played for a while and got
everyone working together and learning the new plays, we started
coming together and it was great."
  At first yesterday, it looked as if Stockwell may have been overly
optimistic.
  St. Raphael quickly jumped out in front, as Sacha Baker rattled off
eight points in the first four minutes. She went on to score another
six, helping the Saints to a 30-23 lead at halftime. 
"We knew we had to stop Sacha Baker because she was burning us in
the first half," said Stockwell. "We had to get our hands in their
faces, stop them from driving and stop Sacha from getting the ball
altogether."
  The Chieftains had much better success in the second half. After Lynn 
Michalenka picked up four points and Baker hit another
basket in the opening minutes, the well went dry for St. Raphael.
  Ponaganset held the Saints scoreless for the next 101/2 minutes. Two
free throws by Dandrow gave the Chieftains their first lead of the
game, 36-34, at 12:02. Free throws were the key after that. 
  St. Ray's sent Ponaganset to the line 24 times, and the Chieftains - 
who shot better than 70 percent for the game - were able to pick up 16 
points and secure the victory. 
  "Walt Haggerty -- you've got to give him a big plus," Shawver said
of his longtime assistant. "Walt really got into their heads. He said,
`You've got to be positive going to the line.' And we changed our 
practice structure shooting foul shots. We shot a lot more foul shots 
from the second half of the year on and it really paid off. Our foul 
shooting improved tremendously down the stretch."
  Sophomore forward Carleen Aubee was also strong for the Chieftains,
adding 9 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Shawver, whose Chieftains 
have been to the Civic Center 8 out of the last 10 years, says this 
year's title is the sweetest. "The first one is great because you don't 
know if you're ever going to do it," he said. "But this one was 
phenomenal. It was unexpected from the beginning.
