Mar 23, 1998 (Match #SC1): Non-League/Injury Fund Game - Round robin at NK South Kingstown plays round-robin The paper indicated a match against North Kingstown but it wasn't that at all. It was just a round-robin, playing a game against three different teams. South played one game each against Chariho, North Kingstown, and Narragansett.Other teams in the gym were Middletown, Exeter-West Greenwich, and West Warwick. South had a squad of twelve, including Michelle Berker, who appeared to be injured. No money was collected. Was this really an injury fund match? Isn't one of the purposes of the Injury Fund Match to collect some money.

Apr 02, 1998 (Match #01): Pilgrim - home South Kingstown loses big-time to Pilgrim Pilgrim behind Meg McGonagle was just too much for South.

Apr 09, 1998 (Match #03): Warwick Vets - away South Kingstown almost (almost!) wins a very exciting match South could have won their first match of the season but it wasn't to be. It was a tough one to lose, especially when you are up 14-2 but don't get the win. It was a long one - "Seinfeld" had to be taped. There were just too many unforced errors by South - a step over the line, a bad serve, a touch of the net, etc. The refs were so-so. South had a few players missing due to the stupid scheduling of school vacation at the same time that there are school activities and the kids have to pick between school activities or vacation. Starting: Lindsey Johnson, Renee Bell, Michelle Berker, Sarah Stanhope, Rebecca Bell, Jessica Harvey. Subs: Justine Henderson, Amanda Nelson. Game #1 - Michelle Berker, with 3 straight, and Lindsey Johnson, with six straight, had good serving runs. Renee and Rebecca Bell had some nice kills. Sarah Stanhope scored on a couple soft tips. Halfway through the game, the ball hit the raised basketball backboard shaking loose an adjustable, threaded hook, about eight inches long. It fell and hit Jessica Harvey in the forehead. She was dazed and had to leave the game. She returned in the third game. It could have been worse. Game #2 - This was a crushing loss. South was up 14-2 thanks to 10 straight points off Lindsey Johnson serves. Unfortunately, South would never score again. They often shot themselves in the foot with silly errors. Game #3 - Things got testy. The ref in the tree house gave South's bench or coach a "red card". (What does that mean? It can't be good.) South captain Michelle Berker became a courier for top secret messages that ran between the ref and Vicki Tefft. It was comical because the voices of the coach and the ref were so loud, the captain's role was superfluous. At one point, the ref over-ruled the student line-man on a call that had favored South. The student's call looked to be correct. Justine Henderson served three straight points. Game #4 - Down 8-4, South got six straight points, five off Rebecca Bell serves to go up 10-9. They would never trail after that and won 15-12 to force a fifth game. Game #5 - Warwick had a six point run to go from 6-5 to 12-5. South could never recover. Two Warwick fans were thrown out of the game. They were sitting just feet from South's servers and were accused of making harassing comments or groans as the South players were serving. Vicki read them their rights before the ref threw them out. Too bad.

SK: Good serving by the Lindsey Johnson, Michelle Berker, Sarah
Stanhope and Justine Henderson. Good sets by Lindsey and Sarah.
Good kills by Renee and Rebecca Bell. Good "D" by Amanda
Nelson, Jessica Harvey.
WA: Erin McGovern had many, many kills landing just in front of
South's middle player in the back.
Big comeback propels 'Canes By BUD BARKER Journal-Bulletin Sports Writer WARWICK - Forget volleyball, the Hurricanes learned a big lesson about life, in their match with South Kingstown last night. And that is: Never, never, give up. The 'Canes put their own exclamation point on that lesson when they battled back to win game two of the five-game, 2-hour, 45-minute marathon, 16-14, after trailing 14-2. The Hurricanes, who won their second match of the season, had every right to pack it in after South Kingstown's 10-point run had the Rebels thinking about a sweep. A couple of ace serves by Renee Bell, and one of Michelle Berker's eight kills, were the main contributions to the Rebels' lead. Warwick handed South most of the other points with bad passing and poor setting that helped put a bunch of shots into the net. The Hurricanes were realistic about the hole they had dug themselves. They figured they didn't have much of a chance. "But we tried harder to stay focused, and above all never give up," Warwick captain Amber Adoian said. "This team never gives up." The Rebels, still looking for their first division victory, never gave up either. And after blowing a 12-point lead and failing on seven straight game-point opportunities, they certainly had reason to give up. The 'Canes had South on the run in game three, when sophomore Erin McGovern slammed six of her match-high 17 kills to the floor in a 15-7 win that also featured the hustling play of Warwick's Crystal Mulcahy. But the Rebs turned in their own rally in game four to send the match to the limit. South scored six straight points for a 10-8 lead in fourth game. It was then forced into a couple of ties before coming away with a 15-12 victory on another ace by Renee Bell, one of four seniors on the Rebels' otherwise young team. Renee Bell had six aces and led the Rebels in kills with 11. SK soccer goaltender Sarah Stanhope had six kills. Rebecca Bell, Renee's twin, had five. But the 'Canes didn't let their dramatic game-two comeback go to waste. They broke open a close fifth game with with a couple of Mulcahy kills, a Lauren Brock block, and an ace from Amy Dancause. The Rebs hung on until Warwick setter Karen Fandozzi closed them out with an ace, and another serve South couldn't return. There were some scary moments in the opening game when Jessica Harvey, a South Kingstown sophomore, was struck in the forehead by a turnbuckle that fell from a baskeball backboard above the gymnasium floor. Harvey returned to play the final two games of the match. In addition to McGovern, Mulcahy and Fandozzi, Lauriza Monegro had a big match for the Hurricanes with her 12 kills.

Apr 09, 1998 (Match #03): Coventry - home South Kingstown wins their first match, shutting out Coventry South won a close first game then sort of breezed the rest of the way. South was playing without Michelle Berker who was injured in an auto accident early Sunday, Easter Morning. She is expected to recover. Starting: Lindsey Johnson, Rebecca Bell, Justine Henderson, Sarah Stanhope, Renee Bell, Jessica Harvey. Subs: Amanda Nelson and Courtney Johnson. Game #1 - What was that violation by South on the opening serve? It had something to do with "LJ" (Lindsey Johnson), yet nothing seemed to change on the next play? Up 4-3, South got rolling when Amanda Nelson subbed in and served 3-straight for a 7-3 lead. She later had two more points on her serves. Sarah Stanhope served well and had some nice sets. "LJ" also served well as she ran the rack at 12-13 for the 15-13 victory. She had a nice "softie" for a 4-3 lead and a nice spike for side-out at 8-4. Jessica Harvey had a nice kill and point at 9-5. Game #2 - Courtney Johnson started and played well as South almost shut out Coventry. "LJ" started the scoring with 3-straight serving points. After a couple side-outs, Justine Henderson served 4-straight points, one of which was, wow! - a rocket" - why doesn't she do that all the time. At 7-0, Sarah Stanhope then served 7-straight. Point-10 came off a miss-set by "LJ" which came down on the other side of the net, unchallenged, for a gift. Sarah couldn't get the 15th point however. After Coventry rang up 5 points, Renee Bell ended the madness with a "too hot to handle" serve. Game #3 - Becca Bell served at 1-5 and scored 5-straight. Sister Renee had a nice kill at 3-5. At 6-6, Sarah Stanhope served 6-straight, including an "ace" down the right side. Jess Harvey's kill at 9-6 highlighted the run. Later, Renee Bell, after securing side-out with a nice "softie", served the last 3 points, with "LJ" having a kill at 14-6, for a 15-6 win and a shutout. Great job!

CO: Cassie (not Cathy) Bardi and Julie Calderone played well.
SK: Good serving by the Lindsey Johnson, Sarah Stanhope, Becca

sets by Lindsey and Sarah. Good kills by Renee and Rebecca
Bell, Jess Harvey, and "LJ". Good "D" by Courtney Johnson, Jess
Harvey.

Apr 20, 1998 (Match #05): North Kingstown - home South Kingstown loses quickly to North Kingstown South Kingstown had a quick night. In about an hour, North Kingstown won three games. They have a good team and don't make too many mistakes. Starting: Lindsey Johnson, Renee Bell, Jessica Harvey, Sarah Stanhope, Justine Henderson, Rebecca Bell. Subs: Amanda Nelson, Courtney Johnson. Game #1 - South only scored two points - their first off a Sarah Stanhope Stanhope serve; the second off a Lindsey Johnson serve. North's Jill McEwen had a string of good serves as she took North from 2-0 to 11-0. Game #2 - Lindsey Johnson served the lone South point. North's Dolly Fischer went crazy serving. She served the last 13 points. Tracie Andrew had some good kills in that run. Game #3 - South was actually ahead for awhile. South went from 3-4 to 8-4 with Becca Bell serving. North had a few bad hits in that run. Point four went on forever. South would only score one more point, however. South's Sarah Stanhope had a nice save. Linda Ferencko had some good kills. North's 11th point was the result of a lack of communication on South's part - "Talk it up, guys".
North Kingstown 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3
South Kingstown 2 1 9 xx xx -- 0
NK: Good team. Diane Dynon didn't play due to a sore right
shoulder.
SK: Some kids sat because they were on vacation during the
so-called school vacation. (Wouldn't you love to see teachers
have to come in to school during vacation to attend various
meetings.)

Apr 22, 1998 (Match #06): Middletown - away South Kingstown wins their second of the season against winless Middletown South played well against a young, inexperienced team. Starting: Lindsey Johnson, Becca Bell, Justine Henderson, Sarah Stanhope, Renee Bell, Jessica Harvey. Subs: Amanda Nelson, Courtney Johnson. Game #1 - Amanda Nelson had a nice string of serves to take South from 2-1 to 7-1. After a couple side-outs, Sarah Stanhope served four points for a 11-1 lead. Renee Bell and Jess Harvey had some good returns in that stretch. Renee had two great serves for 13-2, - the first was a bullet too hot to handle and the second snuck in for an ace. Game #2 - This was a fairly slow game, a lot of early side-outs for the server. Sarah got South on the scoreboard with a couple serves while LJ had some nice sets, 2-3. Later, Becca Bell, at 3-3, had a nice soft kill to gain side-out and give the serve to Amanda who scored two for a 5-3 South lead. At 7-all, thanks to some killer serves by Middletown's Erin Burke, Becca Bell served three points highlighted by a great Jess Harvey spike. She would have a few more in the game. Renne had a nice kill at 11-9 to gain back the serve. Middletown would never score again. Renee had two serves for 13-9. Sister Becca had a nice kill for a side-out. Amanda Nelson had an ace for point 14. Game #3 - South pulled ahead then stalled. It was an exciting game. LJ opened with a service point on a Sarah kill. At 2-5, Sarah served six for a South lead at 8-5. Justine Henderson had a nice kill on point 6. Renee served three points for 11-5, the 11th being an ace. (The basketball hoops, pulled up against the ceiling, caused some havoc during this game - one time, Renee almost scored a basket.) Then Middletown started a run. On three rotations, they pulled ahead 12-11; there was some bad communication by South on Middletown's 10th. Renee had a nice kill to gain one of the side-outs. Becca Bell served to tie the game at 12-all. Middletown went up 13-12 when Sarah had a net infraction. She redeemed herself with a couple serves to put South up 14-13. Renee had a kill on point 13. After Middletown again tied the score at 14-all, LJ served point 15 and then Becca won back a side-out with a great hit and then served another steamer for the 16th and final point.
South Kingstown 15 15 16 xx xx -- 3
Middletown 5 9 14 xx xx -- 0
SK: A few South players continue their "you play, you pay" sit-downs
for being absent during vacation week. Audra Criscione is still
nursing her injury. Get well, Michelle.
MI: Stephanie Wordell played well. Erin Burke has a very strong
serve that gave South fits.

Apr 28, 1998 (Match #07): Toll Gate - away South Kingstown looks awful in their 3-0 lost to Toll Gate Perhaps the players were upset about all their non-league games being cancelled or ignored. (It won't be much of a season if all they play is fourteen games.) Mt. Pleasant didn't show for their non-league game last Friday night. There have been other cancellations. Social workers and therapists are being called in to counsel the players. They did have plenty of excuses for their lousy play at Toll Gate. The Bell sisters were away on college business and their replacements hadn't played a league game in a least three weeks. They looked confused. Some balls dropped amid stares from the players. At other times, the players seem to get in each other's way. Sometimes, South scored on miss-hits that found an open floor. At times it was tough to tell the difference between look-alikes Meagan Arcand and Emily Harbin. One of them would have a good play but when the crowd dispersed after slapping high fives, it was impossible to tell which one was where just a second ago. Starting: Danielle Marrinan, Lindsey Johnson, Justine Henderson, Jessica Harvey, Sarah Stanhope and Amanda Nelson. Subs: Meagan Arcand and Emily Harbin. Courtney Johnson wasn't feeling well. Game #1 - Holly Hummel and Lindsay Ryan had some nice kills for Toll Gate. Danielle Marrinan served two points. Sarah Stanhope had the other one. Lindsey Johnson had a kill at 0-4 to win side-out. Game #2 - South's Jess Harvey had a service run of five points to get South within one at 7-8. Toll Gate had a lot of "2 hits" in that run. After South stopped Toll Gate's scoring 14-7, Toll Gate had five straight serves without scoring a point. (They only had two scoreless serves in the first game.) In that time, South went from 7-14 to 10-14. Justine Henderson had a nice kill to regain serve when they were stalled at 14-10, Toll Gate. LJ served two of South's points. Sarah had a seductive kill to win a point at 2-5. Game #3 - Justine Henderson had a nice kill to score a point and make it 1-all. South led for a brief moment, 2-1. After nine side-outs in which Toll Gate only scored one to make it 2-all, Jen Leigh served from 3-2 to 9-2, Toll Gate.
South Kingstown 3 10 3 xx xx -- 0 Toll Gate 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3 SK: Tough night. Amanda Nelson played well. TG: Jen Leigh, Kristen Acciaoli (SP?), #30, #13, #15 all played well. Lindsay Ryan lied, she said...

South Kingstown 2 5 10 xx xx -- 0 Pilgrim 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3 SK: SCFun was absent. PI: Meg stars once again.

May 06, 1998 (Match #09): Mt. Hope - away Mt. Hope destroys South's playoff chances It was a very disappointing loss. With a win, South would have stood a good chance of making the playoffs. Now, they will need a miracle. South looked much improved over their performances of the previous week. Mt. Hope's Alicia Fay was "the man" for Mt. Hope. When on the front line, she consistently scored or won side-out for the Huskies. All the Mt. Hope players serve with an open hand, not their "unpredictable" fist. Why don't more teams adopt that style? Starting: Danielle Marrinan, Lindsey Johnson, Renee Bell, Jess Harvey, Sarah Stanhope, and Rebecca Bell. Subs: Justine Henderson, Courtney Johnson, Meagan Arcand, and Amanda Nelson. Game #1 - South played well but just couldn't get it rolling. Renee Bell had a nice spike to win South's first side-out. When Lindsay Johnson served South's first point, it had to be the longest point the team has played all year - it went on forever. Jess Harvey served three points to get South within four at 4-8. Sarah Stanhope had a nice block in that run. Rebecca Bell was awesome serving in this game and all night long with a very hard serve. Game #2 - This was the toughest game to lose. South was up 14-13 when some indecision in the back row gave Mt. Hope their side-out. MH then scored three straight for the victory. Down 7-11, LJ served four points (Renee Bell had a strong kill for point #6) to get South to 7-11. The crowd got a little unruly over a call in this stretch. Down 9-12, Becca Bell served three for 12-all. Courtney Johnson had a kill for point #11. After a couple side-outs, LJ hit a soft one for 13-all. Then things went downhill fast. Game #3 - Another tough game to lose. South was up 13-12 and again, Mt. Hope scored three straight points for the win. There was some violation when Sarah was about to serve at 3-4. She never got to serve while the refs discussed things for about three minutes. What was the problem? The Bell sisters had some great serves and kills - Becca served five points.
South Kingstown 6 14 13 xx xx -- 0 Warwick 15 16 15 xx xx -- 3 SK: Vicki used the bench a lot. Everyone played except for one who had missed the previous practice. MH: They do a lot of dancing. In their warmup and also when they serve an ace. "Tweets" is still open.

May 08, 1998 (Match #10): Warwick - home South comes close but fades at the end South Kingstown looked the best they have looked all year (early on) and the match may have been the most exciting so far this year. It was a winnable match but it didn't happen. South made too many bad serves - the players really complicate a simple maneuver involving a fairly big ball. Coach Tefft used her whole bench but unfortunately Warwick found the inexperienced players, especially in the fourth game and late in the third game when South was in the driver's seat. The player-linesmen, who are normally bad, were awful. Starting: Danielle Marrinan, Lindsey Johnson, Jess Harvey, Rebecca Bell, Sarah Stanhope, Renne Bell. Subs: Emily Harbin, Justine Henderson, Meagan Arcand, Amanda Nelson, and Courtney Johnson. Game #1 - South jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Warwick tallied a point. Once again South was unable to "roll into" that 15th point. At 14-3, Warwick scored 5 straight. After winning the side-out, Becca Bell served what wasn't the winning point because next server, Jess Harvey, (and the rest of the team) rotated two spots. Later, at 14-9, Becca Bell served "for real" and got the winning point. She continues to serve very well. She had an ace at 7-0. Sister Renee Bell had a couple kills in the game. Lindsey Johnson had an ace and Sarah Stanhope had a nice block and a kill. Game #2 - What a difference a day makes. The next day, South looked awful. Huh? South's first point came at 1-8. Jess Harvey, who gets better and better with each game, had a couple killer spikes. Game #3 - South could have won this game. Point #1 came on a nice dig by Sarah and a hard kill by LJ. Down 4-7, LJ served four straight for an 8-7 lead. Then it was Warwick, 10-8. Becca served two to tie at 10-all. Sarah served for 11-10 South. Then Warwick scored five straight points for the win. It was disheartening to say the least. Renee Bell and Jess Harvey were spiking well. Game #4 - South played bad. Warwick scored 9 straight unanswered points to begin the game. Sarah Stanhope had a kill at 7-14 to prolong the agony.
Warwick 9 15 15 15 xx -- 3 South Kingstown 15 2 11 7 xx -- 1 WA: Very enthusiastic and noisy. They scream; your ears hurt. Enough! SK: Coach Tefft was extremely upset with some of the obnoxious SK fans and their poor display of sportsmanship. Couldn't tell if she was mad at the elderly people in the second row or the young students in the first row.

May 11, 1998 (Match #11): Coventry - away South Kingstown comes back from the dead to beat Coventry What the hell was that - a cruel joke? South dug themselves such a hole, no one would have bet on them coming back and winning the match. They gave away the fourth game. Then, in the 5th, they were down 13-3. How did they make it back? Starting: Danielle Marrinan, Lindsey Johnson, Rebecca Bell, Jess Harvey, Sarah Stanhope, Renne Bell. Subs: Emily Harbin, Meagan Arcand, Justine Henderson, Amanda Nelson, and Courtney Johnson. Game #1 - They were tied 8-all before South scored seven straight with three side-outs mixed in. Danielle served four points with one ace. LJ served four. She also had a kill. Renee and Jess both had two kills. Sarah had a problem with "two-hits". Game #2 - South never scored more than two straight points until Renne served at 10-11. She served three straight but Coventry came back with four to win 15-13. LJ had an ace and a kill. Jess had a kill and a great one-hand dig. Justine registered a kill. Game #3 - South got back on track and had an easy win. Danielle served the first five points. Becca, Jess (2), Lindsey, and Sarah all had kills. Game #4 - South gave this one away. Up by 12-8, they made unforced error after unforced error (foot faults) to lose 13-15. Renee served six points. She also had a kill. Sis Becca had an ace. Jess had two kills, LJ had another. Game #5 - This game was unbelievable. It's hard to believe they won. Coventry won the coin toss and quickly went up 3-0. After South won side-out, Danielle served an ace for 1-3. Coventry ran six more points with one side-out in the middle before Becca served and made it 2-9. Coventry made it 10-2. Then South made it 3-10. Coventry then scored three straight for 13-3 and it looked over for South. (South had problems with players hitting balls on their way out of bounds while teammates were screaming "out" in plenty of time for the player to not react.) Renee then served three straight, one an ace, to put South at 6-13. Danielle got two more for 8-13. LJ had a kill to win side-out back from Coventry. She then served for 9-13. Coventry then went up 14-9. Three side-outs and Jess had the serve. She managed four straight to give South 13-14. Two side-outs and the serve was back to Meagan. Her first serve was an ace - 14-all. Another point and it was 15-14 South. On the next serve, Emily met Coventry's return at the top of the net and sent the kill to the right inside corner, next to the net for a great comeback, 16-14 South.
South Kingstown 15 13 15 13 16 -- 3 Coventry 8 15 5 15 14 -- 2 CO: Coach Deb Carroll's left hand was in a cast. SK: Great comeback. South's serving percentages were 1-.870, 2-.840, 3-.910, 4-.852, and 5-.885.

May 13, 1998 (Match #12): North Kingstown - away Although they lost to North Kingstown, South is looking better and ... South is improving with each game now. If only the season was a wee bit longer. Jess Harvey is "the man" of the future. Her spikes are getting better. Danielle Marrinan and Meagan Arcand are serving well. Emily Harbin is seeing more time. They just look better, they're getting to more and more low balls, spiking better, serving better, and communicating better although there are still some occasional lapses in concentration. Keep it up. North won three straight and played well. Diane Dynon's shoulder must be better. She "skies" very well from the left and slams the ball to that far right, or "right-hand" if you prefer, corner. NK varies their sets. They don't always set high like South does. Sometimes it's just above the net with the spiker "coming in" and not waiting for the ball to come to her. Doesn't sound so hard, does it? Starting: Danielle Marrinan, Lindsey Johnson, Jess Harvey, Becca Bell, Sarah Stanhope, Renee Bell. Subs: Emily Harbin, Justine Henderson, Meagan Arcand, Courtney Johnson. Game #1 - They played well. Game #2 - Becca Bell had an ace. Game #3 - They got a little sloppy as NK went from 0-3 to 6-3. Bad commx.
South Kingstown 6 2 4 xx xx -- 0 North Kingstown 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3 SK: Jacob Schomp is going to UGA. NK: Coach Fitts, after warning them once, had all the NK Students leave the gym midway through the third game because of inappropriate behavior. Linda Ferencko says she'll be attending Sacred Heart in Fairfield, CN next year - playing soccer. Ceiling is very low at NK.

May 19, 1998 (Match #13): Middletown - home South Kingstown experiments against winless Middletown but still wins South walked a fine line in this match. Do they experiment and risk losing or do they get serious and, although nothing is for sure, most likely win? They did both. Player and strategy changes were tried. One experiment was Lindsey Johnson back-setting to Sarah Stanhope with some success. SCFun had trouble concentrating with summer basketball talk going on in the stands. Plus volleyball alumnae Ariana Johnson (C of William & Mary - '00 and Julie Kent, Texas A&M - '99 were visiting. Audra Criscione came off the DL, her hamstring okayed by the doctor, but didn't see any action. Starting: Danielle Marrinan, Lindsey Johnson, Becca Bell, Jessica Harvey, Sarah Stanhope, Renee Bell. Subs: Emily Harbin, Justine Henderson, Meagan Arcand, Courtney Johnson. Game #1 - Easy win. Renee Bell, and Jess Harvey had kills. LJ had an ace. Sarah and Jess both had four-point serving runs. Game #2 - South was up 11-2 and 12-6 before Middletown took advantage. Erin Burke served the last four points for Middletown as they pulled out the win. Danielle Marrinan had an ace. Game #3 - Another fairly easy win for South. Game #4 - Back and forth. 3-up, 4-up, 6-up, 8-up, 10-up, etc. You get the idea. At 15-all, Renee won side-out with a great spike. Jess then served for 16-15. But Middletown got the side-out on the next serve and then served three straight points for the 18-16 win and some drama. LJ and Danielle both had service aces. Game #5 - South went up 5-0 on Danielle's serves. Becca Bell had a big spike as did Jess. Sarah had a nice save a few rotations later to set up side-out for South. Emily Harbin won another side-out with a kill. Sarah served 6&7-0. Then Renee had five service points for 12-0. Middletown finally got on the scoreboard with a couple for a 2-12 deficit. LJ served an ace for 13-2. After Middletown scored again, Becca served the last two points for an easy 15-3 win and the match.
Middletown 1 15 6 18 3 -- 2 South Kingstown 15 12 15 16 15 -- 3 MI: Erin Burke still impresses with her serves. SK: Next game, Thursday, May 21, is senior night.

May 21, 1998 (Match #14): Toll Gate - home South Kingstown ends the season with an emotional "senior night" The season came to an emotional end with the injured Micheele Berker and her fellow seniors being honored. Michelle was there in a wheel chair, making her first appearance since the third game of the season and her near fatal (she was wearing a seat belt) accident on Easter Morning. She continues to recover at home. She will have surgery next week on her right leg. It was good to see her, if only it could have been under better circumstances. (She has yet to see a tutor.?) The other seniors saying good-bye were Lindsey Johnson, Rebecca Bell, and Renee Bell. It was a different senior night in that Coach Tefft and the kids came right over to the SK bleachers rather then conduct the ceremony from mid-court. Vicki, a bird watcher, got a framed wall hanging that looked bird-related. There was cake after the game. It was a noisy game. The Toll Gate fans had some painful horns that they played with all night long. The refs said they could do nothing about it. I guess the RIIL doesn't care if fans have their hearing injured. South played extremely well - when they played. Their biggest problem was their inability to get serves in play. Serve after serve either went long or short. It was frustrating. Also, they often kept Toll Gate's "long" shots in play rather than let them go out of bounds. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Supreme Court Justice, refed from the perch. Starting: Danielle Marrinan, Lindsey Johnson, Becca Bell, Jessica Harvey, Sarah Stanhope, Renee Bell. Subs: Emily Harbin, Justine Henderson, Meagan Arcand, Courtney Johnson. Game #1 - SCFun counted seven concentration errors on serves or "longs". LJ played well. She had a kill. Sarah Stanhope had a nice save. Toll Gate went from 5-1 to 13-1 in one serving rotation. Game #2 - There were lots of side-outs in this game. South played tough. Jess Harvey, Becca, Sarah, and LJ all had some kills/spikes/blocks. Game #3 - If only South had a power spiker. Becca, LJ, Jess, and Sarah again had some nice kills and blocks. Toll Gate went up 3-0 on a ball that three South players just stood and watched hit the floor. The three kids could have held hands, they were so close to one another. LJ came close to serving out of turn towards the end but Coach Tefft caught it before it happened. Thanks Vicki and players for a fun, interesting season. Good luck to the seniors and especially Michelle.
Toll Gate 15 15 15 xx xx -- 3 South Kingstown 1 7 1 xx xx -- 0 TG: Caroline Boggs was fun to watch serving. She was trying to put "something" on the ball, looking for a floater. SK: Biggest crowd of the season.
