Apr 05, 1997 (Game #20): URI hosts Brown

Nice day and much better music than at the basketball games. They even
played John Fogarty's "Centerfield". Merrie Cloutier is out with a
possible fracture in her left wrist. Second baseman, Jennifer Klinglesmith
is playing with a mask over her broken nose. The pitcher from California,
Correna Berlinger (?), went back to CA; she couldn't stand RI weather.
It was a strange start for Brown's Kelly Maloy. She struck out Kellie
Cookus on three straight pitches. Then Sam Zigmont lined to centerfield
for two outs. Then all hell broke loose as URI eventually batted around,
scoring six runs. The inning included back-to-back doubles by Robin Davies
and Kathy Bailey along with an infield hit by Lisa Smith that was called
out but after both teams had left the field, Melissa Jarrell's request for
a second opinion had the home plate umpire reversing the decision.
URI's third baseman, Zigmont looked good on defense, getting a "5-6"
force at third, snaring a line drive headed for her belly button while 35
feet from home, and avoiding losing her head on another shot that wizzed
passed her right ear. Centerfielder Sue Kessler also looked good on D as
she snared a line drive while running to her left and almost doubled the
runner off first.
Kellie Cookus just missed a homer as her shot hit the centerfield fence,
220 feet away. Kessler, Davies, Bailey, and Smith all had two hits.

Kelly Maloy also started the second game. SCFun stayed for two innings.
Number seven for Brown had a nice two run homer over the fence in
right-center. The wind was blowing that way but the blow didn't need any
help. The ProJo's box was incomplete.

Apr 22, 1997 (Game #37): URI hosts PC

Beautiful day. Let's "play two". Lots of hitting. Kellie Cookus had three
hits, one a home run that cleared the left field fence by 30 feet. She had
three rbi's and a run scored. Sue Kessler also hat three hits. Everyone in
the lineup had at least one hit except for one player. The game was called
after five because of the "eight run rule". Cookus showed great range at
second base.
Kathy Bailey chalked up another win. She just missed a shut-out. The lone
PC run scored on a passed ball. Beth Stavru is no longer an assistant
coach.?

A closer game. PC may have scored in the first. It looked like the ump
missed the call as the PC runner on third attempted to score on a passed
ball. She avoided the tag and got the plate with her hand, didn't she?
Jen Klinglesmith decoyed a PC runner going for a double by "pretending"
to bobble the ball in right field and then throwing a strike to second at
the last second to nail the runner.
Sam Zigmont played well at third. Kellie Cookus has a great, quick
release. Merrie Cloutier had three hits, one a double, and scored one run.
Jen Klinglesmith had two hits.

Apr 25, 1997 (Game #41): URI hosts UMass

Thunder and lightning (or is it Denise Davis' flash camera?) and then the
sun is out. Weird weather day. URI did not look good. They did, however,
turn a nice 6-4-3 double play. Seemed like they made more than three
errors. There was some mental errors especially on covering third on the
steal. The first play of the game was a UMass bunt that was thrown wide,
by Cookus covering first. Then Merrie Cloutier booted one. UMass scored
five in the first inning. UMass has a lot of variety in their offense. It
helps to have a lot of lefty batters. URI has none.
Danielle Henderson was over powering for UMass. She struck out fourteen
of a possible eighteen. She struck out the side in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th.
She struck out every URI batter at least once, a couple twice, and one,
three times.
UConn, went up by eight in the top of the sixth, but, unlike RI High
Schools, URI gets their "last at bat". In the top of the sixth, third
baseman Samantha Zigmont had an easy play at home but couldn't get the
ball out of her glove quick enough. Her throw couldn't be handled by
Kessler and two runs scored on the play.
Henderson lost her perfect game when centerfielder Robin Davies blooped
one off the handle over the first baseman's head down the right field line.
Davies went to third when Heather Reifinger's bunt was fielded by Henderson
and thrown wide left of the first baseman. The throw also got by the right
fielder backing up. Davies scored on a wild pitch. But Reifinger never made
it home in time for URI to escape the "eight run" rule.
Johanna Boisslle relieved Bailey who may have had a blister problem.
   UMass 5 1 0 0 0 3 x -- 9 8 1

Apr 25, 1997 (Game #42): URI hosts UMass

Merrie Cloutier displayed some great defense. She also led off the game
for URI with a double and scored on a single down the left field line by
Kellie Cookus after Zigmont reached on an error. A chance at a big inning
went down the drain when Sue Kessler lined to the first baseman who then
reached back to tag first, doubling up Cookus.
It didn't help when UMass brought Henderson back in, to start the third
inning.

Apr 26, 1997 (Game #43): URI hosts La Salle

Great game. URI made a great comeback attempt but if fell short.
La Salle's win knocked URI out of the Atlantic-10 playoffs. Down by two,
URI led off the sixth with a double over the centerfielder's head by
Kellie Cookus. Sue Kessler reached when La Salle's pitcher, Debbie
Klawiter, misplayed a ground ball. Robin Davies grounded out pitcher to
first. Then Lisa Smith laid down a bunt with Cookus on third and Kessler
on second. Klawiter fielded the ball but didn't quite know what to do
with it. She finally threw Smith out at first but Cookus took off for home
and beat the throw.
Kathy Bailey then had a great at bat, finally getting four balls. With
Heather Reifinger at the plate, Klawiter uncorked a wild pitch. Kessler
made a great slide to beat the throw and tie the game at 2-all. Bailey
went all the way to third in the confusion. Unfortunately, she was unable
to score as Reifinger grounded out, pitcher to first.
In the top of the eighth, La Salle's first batter beat out a slap to
third. The next batter laid down a bunt that stopped right on the right
line, five feet from home with no play made by Kessler. Bailey then struck
out the next batter, got the next to fly to center. Then La Salle's third
baseman, Kristin Biddle lofted a fly to right that carried and carried,
just getting by Jenn Klinglesmith's diving attempt in the right field
corner. Two runs scored and that was the ball game.
Merrie Cloutier had two hits, one a double. Klawiter pitched well
although she was a little wild at times. She is only a freshman.
   La Salle 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 2 -- 4 8 2

Apr 26, 1997 (Game #44): URI hosts La Salle

Debbie Klawiter pitched two in a row, getting a 2-0 shutout on her second
attempt of the day. She even pinch hit and got an rbi on a squigly ground
ball to the left side that couldn't be handled. Robin Davies had a lead off
triple to start the fourth but was stranded after two strikeouts and a
ground out. Johanna Boisselle pitched well for URI.
The umpiring was poor all day. There were at least four bad calls.

Apr 27, 1997 (Game #46): URI hosts Fordham

SCFun missed the dramatics in the first game - a Kellie Cookus lead-off
homer in the bottom of the eighth to give URI a 4-3 victory.
In the second game, URI had a fairly easy win. Fordham had Merrie
Cloutier, who had singled to lead off the game, picked off second in the
first inning but blew the easy out with an overthrow of the third
baseman as Merrie made it to third. Merrie then scored when Sue Kessler
got into a run down on her way to second in the "1st and 3rd" situation.
Merrie not only scored but Sue made it back to first.
URI scored two more in the second inning. With one out and the bases
loaded, Merrie Cloutier hit a pop-up but the infield fly was not called
and the ball dropped (unintentionally) on the edge of the outfield grass
behind second base. Fordham probably could have gotten a double play but
all they got was a tag on Jen Klinglesmith who was running from first.
Kathy Bailey scored on that play. Sam Zigmont then hit a shot down the
left field line to plate Lisa Smith for the second run of the inning.
In the third, Kessler (single), Davies (bunt for hit), and Smith (single)
scored on a hit (by Smith), error, and a sacrifice fly (by Klinglesmith).
Kellie Cookus, who had walked, scored in the fourth on a Robin Davies
single to center and in the sixth, Sue Kessler, who had singled to
left-center, scored on a sacrifice fly by Kathy Bailey.
Sam Zigmont and Sue Kessler with two hits each and Robin Davies with
three hits led the offense. Sue Kessler made a fine sliding catch in
centerfield. Zigmont, Cookus and the whole team looked good defensively.
Sue Chymbor looked good in going the distance for URI. Megan Georgovich
scored the lone Fordham run on a double, steal of third, and an rbi by
Angela DiNatale.
